Audio Codecs are used for Audio transmissions over different networks like ISDN (dial-up connections and ISDN leased lines), LAN, 2-Mbit/sand X.21. Dial-up connections are especially used for temporary connections for reporting applications but also for studio programme contribution.

Furthermore, Audio Codecs are needed as back-up solutions for the distribution of the Audio signals to terrestrial transmitters. In comparison to analogue Audio transmission, ISDN Audio Codecs offer a much higher transmission quality since there are less disturbing signals due to digital transmission channels. When digital transmission channels are available, powerful Audio coding algorithms, which require no further error protection, can be used. Standardised multiplexing procedures allow an interworking of units of different suppliers. In addition to the Audio signals, data signals can be transmitted.

The latest technology used for transmission is Audio over IP. Since ISDN will be switched off in some countries, this technology will become more and more important in the future. The EBU (European Broadcasting Union) has responded to this development and created together with the Audio Codecs' manufactureres a standard for Audio over IP transmissions (EBU-TECH 3326) to avaoid compatibility problems between different Codecs.  The first draft of the standard was published in 2007, the first interworking test took place in February 2008.
